Script – Season two

Episode 8

(music) (Whale sounds)

Neri:Charley calling. Can you hear?

(music)

Mera:No.
Neri:Maybe you hear him tomorrow.

Hellegren:The moment I saw Jane Seaforth at the institute, I felt there was something familiar about her. Something that troubled me. I now realize it was her resemblance to the girl from the sea. Could they be related?
Forsyth:It’s possible.
Hellegren:I intend to find out. We know Jane left the institute in the company of children from ORCA – which is why I’m sending you there.
Forsyth:Me?
Hellegren:Immediately. Your brilliance with computers provides the perfect cover. Officially, you’ll be there to advise in the upgrading of their network. Unofficially – ah, Liselle. This young lady will accompany you. Liselle is one of the institute’s brightest students and has volunteered to help us in our quest. And, of course, has the advantage of having known Jane Seaforth personally. Your task is to discover all you can about the girls. Both of them. Forsyth – I want you to report all developments directly to me. Liselle, I want you to mingle with the young crowd. Win their trust and find out who is involved. You understand?
Liselle:Yes, doctor Hellegren.

Neri:Now we find some berries.
Mera:These look good.
Neri:No!
Mera:You just said we should find berries.
Neri:Bad berries. Make you sick. Very bad.
Mera:Didn’t feel like berries anyway. It’s all I’ve had since I got here. I’m sick of berries!
Neri:What do you want then?
Mera:Normal foods.

(Chatting)

Jason:What are you doing here? And what do you want?
Neri:Hamburgers. Mera doesn’t like island food. And I want to see mother.
Jason:Great. Okay, Brett, you go take Mera down to the galley. I’ll take Neri to the lab. And Vanessa, go and find Mick and make sure that wherever he is, he stays there. Come on.
Brett:Come on, this way.

Dianne:Neri, you’ve got to understand. Your world is completely different to the one that Mera’s used to.
Neri:But sister sad. Makes me sad. Makes me scared. Scared she leave.
Dianne:Well, have you tried talking to her?
Neri:You.
Dianne:What, you want me to talk to her?
Brett:Hey, Jase! Special of the day. Double choc milkshakes.
Neri:Please.
Dianne:Uh – that looks pretty good. You guys, why don’t you go and get me some.
Brett:Sure.
Dianne:Mera? You can stay here. Look, I know you don’t know me very well and this must all seem very confusing but – I think I know what you’re going through. You feel like a stranger, don’t you. You see, Brett, Jason and I, when we first came to ORCA, that’s how we felt.
Mera:At least you still got to sleep in proper beds and eat proper food.
Dianne:You’re right. I mean, it did take a while to get used to it but – I mean, one day the island will feel like home to you.
Mera:The island’s Neri’s home. It’s not mine.
Dianne:You know what? You might be more like your sister than you think. I’m sure with a little time, it’ll get better.
Mera:I used to think that about life on the mainland. It never did.
Dianne:Oh well – that’s because you were someone called Jane Seaforth. Someone who didn’t even exist.
Mera:Right now – I don’t know who I am – where I belong – (crying) I don’t know who I am.
Dianne:Oh, sweetie. You’re someone really special. It’ll be all right. Come on. It’ll be all right.

Sam:Ok, that’s the rules. Just remember, I make ’em and you guys don’t break ’em. That way, we’ll get on just fine.
Mick:Okay, funsters. You can relax. The Mick meister’s here.
Sam:Glad you could make it.
Jason:You’re late.
Vanessa:Yeah, thanks for all the help.
Mick:Let’s get something straight. This wasn’t my idea. I’ve got better things to do than hang out on some crummy boat with the nautical dork squad.
Jason:I don’t care what you think, mate.
Dianne:Excuse me, Mick. Wanna help us with the cables?
Jason:What an animal.
Dianne:Well, there’s nothing we can do about it. If his mother wants him on the boat, he’s on the boat. All we have to do is make sure he stays up on deck away from Neri.
HELEN:Would all new residents please report to the berth allocation terminal. Thank you. Module lima. Level three, cabins 36 and 37.
Winston:Coming Mick?
Mick:Yeah.

Vanessa:YO-11.
Jason:Yeah, that’s right.
Vanessa:How long does it take?
Jason:Pretty much all day.
Winston:Sonar display unit?
Brett:Check!
Mick:Hey, what’s this green switch for?
Brett:No, no.
Dianne:Don’t touch that. I tell you what. Why don’t you go up on deck and check the scuba gear.
Mick:But it was checked before it was loaded.
Dianne:That’s okay. Let’s check it again, shall we? All right. Tell Neri we’ll be ready for her in ten minutes, okay. I want you to ask her to stay under the sonar equipment.
Jason:Gotcha.
Dianne:And you guys keep your eyes open for any interesting marine specimens, okay?
Jason:Yep.
Dianne:And one more thing, Jase. Would you make sure that Mick stays up on deck.
Jason:Okay.
Dianne:Brett, would you stand on the stairs and warn me if either Mick or Sam come down.
Brett:Yep.
Winston:There she is. Look how the readings intensify.

(Hiss of air from scuba tank)

Jason:Hey! Where do you think you’re going? You’re supposed to stay here.
Mick:How come?
Jason:Uh – look out duty.
Mick:For what?
Jason:Just stay here, all right.
Mick:Get out of my way.
Sam:Hey! Hey! Hey! What’s going on?
Mick:Nothing.
Sam:Good. You do what you’re told and you won’t get into trouble.
Vanessa:Okay?
Jason:Yeah.

(music)

Winston:Neri’s powers must be growing. Every day she’s influencing our readings more strongly.
Sam:How’s it going, everyone? Talking nobel prize or what?
Dianne:Not quite.
Sam:Fantastic. Well, if there’s anything down there, we’re certainly gonna find out what it is. What’s it like having a genius for a mum?
Brett:Oh, she isn’t really –
Sam:What’s the plan? We hang around here or head back to base?
Winston:There’s hours of material to analyze. We probably should think about back to start collating it.
Dianne:Yep, if you could give us about five minutes.
Sam:Fine by me.
Dianne:Genius for a mother.

Neri:Mother is happy with work?
Jason:Yeah, yeah. Listen – you better go before captain bligh sees you.
Neri:You don’t like captain bligh?
Jason:Well, actually, his name’s Sam but yeah, you’re right. He’s not my favourite person.
Neri:Why?
Jason:Look, don’t you think you better go back to Mera.
Neri:No. I want to know why you don’t like Sam bligh.

(music) (Bees buzzing)

Mera:(screaming)

Jason:I mean it’s obvious he’s got a [?] for her. He’s just not mum’s type.
Neri:What type is he?
Jason:The type you can’t trust.

(Whale sounds)

Jason:He’s nothing like my father, either. Neri? What’s wrong?

(Whale sounds)

Jason:Neri? Hey! Hey! Come back. Hey!
Sam:Talking to fish, now? Drinks below.

Sam:Here we are. Don’t get too excited. It’s only apple juice. I guess the commander will be pretty happy with your progress.
Dianne:Yeah. Um, Sam – could I ask you a favour?
Sam:Sure.
Dianne:My whale research – it’s still quite a long way off and it would just be really handy if commander Byrne didn’t understand how far ahead we are with the survey – and that would give me a chance to –
Sam:Spend some more time on your own projects.
Dianne:Yep.
Sam:You can count on me.
Dianne:Really?
Sam:Yeah. Well, it’ll be our little secret.
Dianne:Oh! Thank you.
Jason:Mum! Nothing.

Mera:Help!

(music)

Neri:Mera! Hold.
Mera:I can’t!
Neri:Hand. Now.

(music)

Mera:Ouch!
Neri:Sorry. Sorry for other things, too. I leave you here alone.
Mera:It’s okay.
Neri:No. Not okay. My fault.
Mera:No. It’s not your fault. I keep telling you. It’s this stupid island.
Neri:Not stupid. If you want island to be friend to you, you must be friend to it. Come, sister. I show you.

(music)

Neri:Now they are still. See? Earth give you food when you learn how to find it. Father say never take more than you need.
Mera:Aah! I can do it! (Laughing)
Mera:I can’t!
Neri:Yes. Yes you can. Believe you can and you will.
Mera:Yeah! I can do it! I can!
Neri:Look! Charley!

(Whale sounds)

Neri:Come on.

Winston:Come on.
Sam:All ashore who’s going ashore. Especially you, land lubber. What’s wrong?
Dianne:Oh, home work.
Sam:What’ve you got to do?
Dianne:Put these scans through grid master and run a mineral analysis. It’s what I do every night although today we covered such a large area.
Sam:Can I help? Why don’t you leave it here and I’ll run it through the computer.
Dianne:Are you serious?
Sam:Yeah, I’m not completely computer illiterate, you know. I did this sort of thing on the north sea rigs for years.
Dianne:Well – it’s all there. Thanks.
Sam:Go home.
Dianne:I will. See you tomorrow.
Sam:Bye. You stay here.
Jason:Why?
Sam:Because I think it’s about time me and you had a little talk. You don’t like me, do you?
Jason:I don’t like you hanging ’round my mum. No.
Sam:Well, maybe that’s not for you to decide.
Jason:Well, maybe you should just bud out where you’re not wanted.

Sam:

Are you the one they call toady?

Froggy:

Froggy. I was just –

Sam:

Just relax, kid. I hear you know all about computers. I’ve got a little disk I want you to analyze. Just tell me what that is. There.

Froggy:

Why?

Sam:

Let’s just say I’m curious. Very curious. So come on – and I won’t tell anyone you’re here without authority.

Froggy:

Give me time, okay!

Sam:

Well, give.

Froggy:

It’s titanium. That stuff’s worth more than gold! We’d better tell doctor Bates. I mean, this is her data.

Sam:

Listen, kid. Let’s me and you make a little deal. How old are you?

Froggy:
Sam:

Do you want to live ’til you’re 13? Don’t tell anyone.

Froggy:

But this is –

Sam:

No one.

(music)

Neri:Why you smile?
Mera:It’s a surprise. While you were playing with Charley, I was busy getting dinner ready. Look. Good berries. Honey from hive. And I cut the coconuts exactly the way you showed me.
Neri:Good.
Mera:You were right, you know. Once you get used to it, your island isn’t so bad after all.
Neri:No. Not my island. Our island. Come on, let’s eat. How did you get the honey?
